Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh belonging to the Bhinjwar tribal community in Chhattisgarh is considered the ‘first freedom fighter’ of the state. He was a landlord amongst the tribal groups and led their rebellion against the British in the 1857 war of independence. Previously, in 1856, he raided the British granaries and redistributed grains to alleviate the effects of famine in the region. The British deployed a whole regiment to crush Singh’s army of 500 persons. He was executed on 10 December 1857, at Jaistambh Chowk of Raipur.
