Atukuri Molla

Srinivas Hariharan

Atukuri Molla was a Telugu poetess, who composed the Ramayana in Telugu. She lived between 1440 to 1530 in the Kadappa region of Andhra Pradesh. Mollamma, as she was known, had great patronage from the then King Krishna Devaraya. She was born to a potter, and took to Shaivism quite early. However, her meditations on the Bhagavata Purana, compelled her to write about Sri Rama’s life in simple language. It is known as Molla Ramayanam.
